these pics of this elephant are actually our first big spotting on our first day out. being up close and personal with wild animals so massive and so powerful was totally exhilerating.
getting a drink from the local water tank.
he knew that we were there. the animals pretty much always know you're there. he watched us and we watched him. he put on a little show, drinking and playing in the water. then he gave us a few signs that he wanted us to move so that he could cross the road. so we didn't hesitate.
another rather large sighting was this massive herd of 1,000 plus african buffalo. apparently seeing a herd of this size is rare, so we were pumped. but let's be straight up, these were some tough dudes. these animals are notoriously aggressive, and at different points the entire herd stopped to stare directly at us with their deep, rarely blinking, black eyes. those not staring in this picture had already stopped to stare for a while and then finally moved on.
you know you're tough when you can still intimidate with one eye shut and your mouth partially open.

one mean-looking baby and his mama with a bird on her back.

It's all so Lion King and "The Circle of Life".
Besides the wildlife, how was the food and shopping?
